What is medical cannabis?

Medical cannabis, also called medical marijuana, involves using products derived from the Cannabis sativa plant to treat various health conditions. Not long ago, marijuana use was not legal under any circumstances, but many states have now created programs through which people can access this plant for medicinal uses.

Medical marijuana comes in several different forms. Your practitioner helps you determine which products best fit your needs. It’s important to understand that medical marijuana is not a good fit for everyone. If you have a family history of certain mental health conditions or a personal history of a substance use disorder, you may want to try other options.

What health issues qualify for medical cannabis in Utah?

In the state of Utah, people who want to use medical cannabis must go through a process outlined by state health authorities. To begin, you must find a provider registered with the state to recommend medical cannabis. Dragon Healthcare Services and Med Spa is on that list.

Next, you need to come in for a health assessment to determine if medical cannabis is a good fit for your needs. Some of the health issues approved for medical cannabis treatment include:

  • Autism
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • HIV
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Certain rare medical conditions

If your condition is not listed within Utah’s guidelines, you and your provider can petition the Compassionate Use Board for consideration. After a review, you might still be able to obtain a medical cannabis card.

What are the steps involved in registering for medical cannabis?

Once you meet with your provider, the next step is to create a Utah ID account online so you can apply for a medical cannabis card. Your medical provider then signs into the system and enters a certification of your qualifying health condition and a medical recommendation for medical cannabis.

You then pay the online fee for your medical cannabis card application. After a review process, you should receive your medical cannabis card through email and can use it to purchase medical cannabis products through one of the state’s designated cannabis pharmacies.
